Botulinum toxin has been used for many years in medicine to reduce the over activity of muscles, whether for medical reasons or more recently (15 years) aesthetics. It is commonly known as BOTOX and is a prescription only drug in the UK.

Small injections of the drug are administered into the muscles of the face which cause wrinkles and undesired facial activity. This results in a relaxing of the muscles which in turn softens and reduces the wrinkles. The effects last up to six months depending on the patient.
